My name is Steve Douglas. My background is in retail sales and retail management. Retailers work their peak hours when everyone else has time off to shop. These hours were making raising a family very difficult, so I decided to switch careers. One with a better schedule. In early 1988 I began my new career as a sign retailer.

Six years later, and with a lot of experience under my belt, including a year at a franchise shop, I decided it was time to go out on my own. I considered opening my own retail shop, but with so much time already spent doing retail, I was not too excited about the prospect. I really liked the sign business though, so I wanted to do something within the industry. One thing I had noticed is that most people in the sign business in the San Diego area ordered their 3 dimensional letters from out of the area. I decided to fill that gap and provide them, wholesale, to the local area shops.

In May of 1994 The Raised Letter Company was born. I bought a bandsaw and made sample kits. I created some price lists, and went out to visit the 20 or so sign makers I had met during my six year tenure as a retailer. The results were immediate. The orders started coming in. I would pick up a paper pattern from a sign shop, hand cut the letters, paint them, and then deliver the finished product.

Word spread. The company grew. Within a few years I had CNC router machines, a staff, and UPS was delivering for me. The Raised Letter Company had become the place to get 3 dimensional letters in the San Diego area.

In May of 1998, my son (the computer programer) and I decided to build a web site. We’d be able to take orders over the internet. The site was called Raisedletter.com. This site allowed our customers to upload graphics files to us and tell us exactly what they wanted. It was a good site, and it even won the Sign Builder ‘Signs on the Web 2000’ Gold award. I was ready to promote this site to the whole world, but I was convinced that we could do better.

Work immediately began on a comprehensive new site (part of which you’re looking at now). This web site would not only provide our customers with all the tools they could ever use in dealing with 3 dimensional letter quoting and ordering, but it would seamlessly work with a new web based internal order processing system that would greatly enhance our production capability.

I’m so glad that we waited. I believe that our working web site is now the best sign vendor site on the web. It offers more tools and features for your use than any other I’ve seen. It does mesh seamlessly with our internal order processing system, and we are able to produce more in less time than ever before.

I know this was a little long winded, but I wanted you to know something about how this company came to be. I really love the sign industry. I believe sign makers deserve and should expect a high level of service and quality from their vendors I believe in a strong vendor-customer relationship. I believe in delivering a quality product, on time.
